Job Title: Technical Writer
Role Type: Full-time employee, 30-40 hours/week
Role Location: This position can be a virtual or in-person position at our studio in Black Mountain, North Carolina.
Role Offer: $25 - $30 per hour; based on skill set and level of experience.
We’re looking for a thoughtful, detail-oriented Technical Writer to help turn Lo & Behold Stitchery’s designs, techniques, and educational content into clear, accurate, and user-friendly instructions for our quilting community. This role is ideal for someone who loves organizing information, explaining detailed steps in an approachable way, and ensuring every pattern, course lesson and technical resource reflects the care and quality our customers know and trust.
As our Technical Writer, you’ll work closely with the Integrator to support the creation and refinement of quilt pattern instructions, course content, tutorials and other technical materials. Quilt pattern designs and creative direction come from Brittany, our CEO and pattern designer, who is hands-on in the overall pattern creation process. This role helps bring these designs and teaching materials to life through polished documentation, clear step-by-step writing, accurate diagrams and consistent formatting.
This position requires strong writing and editing skills, excellent attention to detail and the ability to work comfortably in Adobe InDesign and Illustrator. The right person will be both creative and precise, able to think from the maker’s perspective while maintaining consistency, accuracy and clarity across all technical content.
Responsibilities Include:
- Write, edit, and update clear, accurate, and customer-friendly technical materials, including quilt pattern instructions, course content, tutorials, labels, charts, worksheets, and supporting resources.
- Translate Lo & Behold Stitchery designs, construction methods, and educational concepts into step-by-step instructions that are easy to understand and follow.
- Work closely with the Integrator and CEO to clarify direction, gather technical information, manage priorities, and keep projects moving forward.
- Support Brittany’s pattern designs and creative direction by bringing instructions, diagrams, and layouts into polished, customer-facing formats.
- Organize content in a logical, skill-level appropriate way that supports the maker’s experience from start to finish.
- Create and refine visual aids, diagrams, charts, and instructional layouts using Adobe InDesign and Illustrator.
- Review technical content for clarity, consistency, grammar, spelling, formatting, measurements, terminology, and accuracy.
- Maintain consistency across patterns, course materials, and related content by following Lo & Behold Stitchery’s brand voice, style guides, formatting standards, and documentation processes.
- Manage revisions and version control to ensure the correct files are maintained, updated, and shared with the team.
- Communicate clearly with team members, provide project updates, ask clarifying questions as needed, and help ensure technical materials align with product, course, and marketing timelines.
Required Proficiencies and Qualifications:
- 2+ years of experience in writing, copywriting, technical writing, or instructional content creation, with experience writing quilt patterns or other sewing, quilting, or craft-related technical instructions.
- Strong understanding of quilt construction, quilting terminology, fabric cutting, piecing, pressing, pattern organization, and current trends within a modern quilting aesthetic.
- Ability to think from the maker’s perspective, anticipate where customers may need additional clarity or support, and explain detailed information clearly and concisely.
- Strong Adobe InDesign and Illustrator skills, with the ability to organize complex information into clear, polished layouts and create, edit, and prepare accurate graphics and design files.
- Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills, with familiarity in technical documentation standards, including clarity, consistency, formatting, style guides, and version control.
- Exceptional attention to detail in both written content and visual materials, with the ability to identify inconsistencies, grammar issues, formatting errors, unclear directions, and areas for improvement.
- Highly organized, self-managing, and proactive, with the ability to work independently, take initiative, anticipate needs, manage multiple projects and revisions, seek feedback, and consistently meet deadlines.
- Able to receive feedback, ask thoughtful clarifying questions, and revise work carefully while staying aligned with Lo & Behold Stitchery’s brand voice, style standards, and documentation processes.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced, high-growth business where priorities may shift, timelines can be tight, and multiple projects are often in motion at once.
- Positive, team-oriented, and accountable, with a willingness to give and receive help, contribute to a healthy team culture, and approach challenges with professionalism.
- Committed to excellence and to creating accurate, thoughtful, customer-centered work that reflects the care and quality Lo & Behold Stitchery is known for.
- Due to conflict of interest, this position does not allow writing or tech editing for others in the quilting or sewing industry.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience writing for digital platforms, with a working understanding of SEO best practices.
